'Believe in Me'

In August this year we started working with boys in the Second Chance Home, Ritinjali. Coming from all parts of the country, this facility offers a chance at vocational training and personality development for marginalized youth. While there was a pre-decided outcome of this endeavor, three months is a long time to go deeper into issues faced by the boys. Starting with basic theatre and arts based exercises, we introduced the boys to storytelling and narration of life’s experiences through theatre. It was only recently in our post-program interaction that we realized that the process had the boys initially confused as to what was happening and why. As facilitators however, we found our participants to be whole-heartedly involved in the process. Gradually as the workshops went along, we went deeper into stories of marginalization, societal isolation and the impact it had on mental health. In fact, all stories were bound by this feeling of loneliness and the need to grab the ‘second chance’ at life our participants have received. From these stories began our journey of creating an interactive performance that captured this change in their lives. We were helped tremendously by what the boys had to share through their writing, their snippet performances and art pieces. From being called ‘Nikamma, Bevkoof, Foolish boy’ to the urge of being seen as ‘Hoshiyaar, Mehnati Kamyaab’, the boys explored their lives before they entered Ritinjali and what happened once they entered this new space. Will this experience transform their lives? Do they think about family and home? Will they be able to achieve their dreams? ‘Believe in Me’ was performed at the World Wildlife Fund auditorium on November 10, 2019 on Ritinjali Day. Capped with music, theatre and original songs, the performance received a positive feedback from the audience who felt connected with the stories shared on stage. We would like to thank Ritinjali for giving us this opportunity and our participants who felt comfortable sharing their vulnerabilities with us.
