Playback Theatre at Bluebells School International

Saturday, July 16, 2022, saw us conducting a special Playback Theatre performance for the teaching fraternity of Bluebells School International, Delhi. The theme for the day was ‘Uncomfortable Spaces’ as we navigated through the tough reality of work-life balance and teaching after schools have reopened physically. What ensued for two hours of an emotional roller coaster where we laughed, cried, reveled and mellowed as a unit. The performance seemed to build a community where all teachers, old and new, got to know each other beyond their conventional roles as colleagues and started to understand each other’s personal journeys. Playback Theatre is an improvisational artform where actors perform the stories by audiences spontaneously. It is conducted by a conductor who holds the space for everyone and a musician who accompanies with the background score, setting the mood and emotional wavelength for the story and the room. Our group has been doing…

ONLINE PLAYBACK PERFORMANCE WITH DENAVE – ‘ TOWARDS A NEW HORIZON’

At The Yuva Ekta Foundation, our effort during this lockdown has been to reimagine the way we express, interact and engage with each other. We find that now more than ever, the Arts are becoming integral to re-establish this sense of human connection. Arts offer new ways of listening to our voices and our stories, and finding meaning to our lived experiences. It offers a chance to be reflective and introspective, often providing a calming and relaxing space for us to be present with our thoughts. In response to the Covid-19 crisis, The Foundation has started several initiatives to keep the Arts alive in the online world. One of the most seamless entries in this regard has been of Playback Theatre - a form of improvisational theatre in which audience or group members tell stories from their lives and watch them enacted on the spot. On August 28th, we got…

ONLINE PLAYBACK THEATRE PERFORMANCE WITH TATTLE

It is not unreal to think that the world will not be the same anymore. Our notions of work, interaction, communication and hygiene have all swiftly been replaced by ‘novel’ ideas. Undeniably, this lockdown was a necessary evil to contain the spread of this deadly virus; but are we ready to accept that it also necessitates wide-ranging structural changes? It is equally distressing to already witness the unequal impact of these transitions. At The Yuva Ekta Foundation, our effort during this lockdown has been to reimagine the way we express, interact and engage with each other. We find that now more than ever, the Arts are becoming integral to re-establish this sense of human connection. Addressing Sexual Harassment at Workplace

Playback has been a powerful tool to explore community sentiments and stories. For a gathering of people, it offers a means to connect emotionally through lived experiences and stories. It is for this reason that PT is being used heavily to work in corporate office environments. Areas like team-building, office hierarchies, etc. are often being brought to the fore. We've been using Playback in our workshops with Teamwork Arts. Pvt. Ltd., an arts-based company who lend us their workshop space. We started a Kreativ Adda series@Teamwork Arts where we bring Master Practitioners from a varying field of arts, working through painting, dance-movement, etc. and creating a safe space for expression. Playback Theatre has been a consistent presence in this exercise. We’ve gone on to explore deeper, more significant issues through Playback. Our first bite at this was to address ‘Sexual Harassment at Workspace’ as part of an awareness program at…

Desks, Chairs and Targets: Where’s the well-being?

Our gradual progress in using Playback in different projects is reaping reinforcing rewards. More recently in June this year, we tied up with the ‘Ek-Prana’ Foundation to work on ‘Stress Management and Well Being’ at the offices of Teamwork Arts. Our session was an inauguration into a day where ‘Ek-Prana’ Foundation spoke about maintaining one’s physical and mental health in today’s tough work environment. The Playback session opened up participants into talking about the conflicts between office and personal responsibilities through the kind of pressures that exist today. Some stories were riveting. An employee spoke about his conundrum of creating a comfortable domestic life. He revealed the pressure of meeting targets in the office that ultimately decide his professional career. To add to that the rising concern for the environment which directly translates into costs like purchasing a car, buying a house and moving out of an urban area. Moreover,…
